Follow these steps to download WWMX components.  You only need to perform the first two steps to experience all of the features of the WWMX Client (browsing, adding photos, adding annotations, creating stories).  Continue to Step 3 to download utilities for location-stamping your own photos (with or without a GPS device).  Complete Step 5 to view standalone stories created by the WWMX Client.

For the Travelogue application, you only need Steps 3 and 4.  The WWMX Client is not necessary.

You will need Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 to run our applications.

1.  Install the Microsoft .NET Framework

All of the WWMX-related downloads require the Microsoft .NET Framework (version 1.1) to run properly.  Please follow instructions from that link to determine whether you already have it, and if not, to install.  If you need to install it, the process is tedious, and we can't apologize enough for putting you through it:  You will be asked to install through the Windows Update site.  When that site loads, on the left-hand panel, click Pick updates to install, and then select Windows (XP or 2000) beneath it.  You should see a number of Recommended Updates in the main frame.  One of them will be Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1.  Press the Add button for it; then click on Review and install updates near the top of the frame; finally, press the Install Now button that then appears.  You may then need to Accept the standard EULA before proceeding.  Whew.

2.  Install the WWMX Client Application

Install the WWMX Client application once you have the .NET Framework on your machine (click Yes if you accept the EULA, and then click Save when prompted; then open the file, called WWMXClientSetup.msi, in the directory you saved it to).  This will put a WWMX Client icon on your desktop, which you can open to run the application.  At this point, you will be able to browse all of the photos in the WWMX, add your own photos (by dragging and dropping photos to a location on the map), annotate photos, and create stories.

See our version history for recent bug fixes and feature releases.

3.  Install WWMX Utilities

The WWMX Client does not actually add location information to your photos; it only saves the location information in the WWMX database.  To stamp photo files themselves with location information, download the WWMX Location Stamper.  It will write location information into what is called the EXIF header of a JPEG file, so that the location information is stored with the file itself (rather than on a separate database).

If you own a Garmin GPS device, location stamping can be much easier than manually dragging-and-dropping onto a map.  Install the WWMX TrackDownload application, which will load tracks from a handheld GPS device.  The WWMX Location Stamper will then allow you to location-stamp photos by matching time stamps between your track log and the photo files.

See the Help page for how to use these tools.  If you have a non-Garmin brand of GPS, check the links at the bottom of this page.

  • WWMX TrackDownload (click Yes if you accept the EULA, and then click Save when prompted; then open the file, called TrackDownloadSetup.msi , in the directory you saved it to) downloads track information from any attached Garmin® GPS device that supports track logs, and saves them in GPX format .  This application is also compatible with the PocketPC platform.
  • WWMX Location Stamper (click Yes if you accept the EULA, then click Save when prompted; then open the file, called LocationStamperSetup.msi , in the directory you saved it to) checks a digital photo's embedded timestamp, correlates it to GPS track files loaded in GPX format (saved by the TrackDownload application above), then stamps the image with latitude and longitude location information.  Don't have a GPS device?  This application can also be used to drag and drop your images onto a map in order to stamp them.

4.  Install WWMX Travelogue (New as of Nov. 19, 2003!)

Install the WWMX Travelogue authoring tool (click Yes if you accept the EULA, then click Save when prompted; then open the file, called WWMXTravelogueSetup.msi, in the directory you saved it to). The WWMX Travelogue allows you to author a web page that consists of a map, photographs, text, and if you have them available, GPS tracks (in GPX format).

Note, you do not need to install the WWMX Client to take advantage of this application.  However, if you like it, please consider uploading some photos from your travels to the WWMX and add annotations that link to your Travelogue site!

5.  Install WWMX Story Viewer

The WWMX Client applications allows you to create Stories (effectively, photo slideshows with maps and pop-tags).  These can be saved in the application as separate files that you can distribute to your friends.  In order to view them independent of the WWMX Client, install the WWMX Story Viewer application (click Yes if you accept the EULA, then click Save when prompted; then open the file, called StoryViewerSetup.msi , in the directory you saved it to).

Alternatives to WWMX Utilities

There are other applications that download tracks and/or stamp photos with location information.  Some hits from a casual web search:
