World-Wide Media eXchange

Welcome to the World-Wide Media eXchange

What can you do with a gazillion photos on a single database indexed by their location?

Browse photos by location.  Contribute your own photos to a world-wide database.  See who else has been where you've been.

WWMX Client Application Tip:  If you see a photo that you like, you can comment on it by adding a pop-tag (double-click on the thumbnail and drag a rectangle across a portion of the screen) or send e-mail to the owner by right-clicking on the thumbnail.

Thanks to our 500+ photo contributors, who have endured a potentially long, if simple, install process, to add more than 40,000 photos to the WWMX.  We love to have photos of exotic locations, but we feel photos of the local cafe (even multiple shots of it, taken by different people, or at different times...) could be just as interesting.  If you have any digital photos you feel comfortable sharing with the world, try adding them to the WWMX!

The World-Wide Media eXchange (WWMX) is a centralized index of digital photos, where photos are tagged by the geographic location where they were shot.  It's an experimental research project run by the Interactive Visual Media Group at Microsoft Research.

The project explores possibilities with digital photographs and geographic location.  The location where a photo was taken provides clues about its semantic context and offers an intuitive way to index it, even in a very large collection.  The combination is powerful, but still not supported well by either the photo-software or camera-hardware industries.  We're trying to establish a strong case for these features, and you can help us -- try the downloads, and tell us about your experience: wwmx(a)microsoft.com.  Your feedback can make a difference!

For a quick glimpse of the WWMX, check out our web demo.

For a richer experience and to participate by registering your own photos, download the WWMX Client application!

If you would like to create your own web travelogues, incorporating information from GPS tracks (optional), text, and photos, try our Travelogue authoring tool.  You just add the items, and the tool puts together a web page with a map (with or without your travel path) and photos linked to their locations on the map.  Go to the Download page and go straight to Steps 3 and 4!
